Boat Share, Boat Syndication, Yacht Share and Boat Clubs
The Yacht and Boat team have been getting lot of calls about boat share, lately. As boat share becomes an increasingly popular option of boat ownership and usage, we thought we'd outline a few of the different boat and yacht share offerings to get you started.
There is a wide variety of boat share clubs and syndicates available in Australia including Sydney & Pittwater, Perth, Gold Coast Queensland, Adelaide, Melbourne and parts of WA and QLD including The Whitsunday Islands. Boat share is a great to get into sailing or boating. There are various methods and options such as “boat share”, “syndication” or “ fractional ownership”.
Boat share syndicates are based at various marinas around Australia. They offer possibility of up to 14 part owners of a single brand new boat, cruiser or yacht such as Beneteau, Riviera, Bavaria, Hanse, Moody, Mustang, Fjord & Seawind. Or, for example, membership of a boat share business, where you can pay a joining fee for, say, $11K and an annual membership fee of $110 per month over two years. This would give you access to a boat for between 15 and 25 outings via an online booking system. So you can either be a part owner with specific guaranteed access or a group member with access to a fleet with choices within the flotilla.

All systems include various maintenance, berthing and insurance costs. Some offer luxury services via a concierge, extra training in navigation or your own skipper for the day. Other luxuries can be delights such as full mini-bar refill, skipper valet berthing, linen, towels and re-fuelling – a total walk-on-walk-off five star service.
Other boat share options are more user involved: re-berthing tasks such as stowing sails, closing hatches and ‘leaving as you find’ cleaning. External maintenance is covered by all, but you decide on your personal level of use and budget when finding the boat share to suit you.
There are fractional ownerships where you can buy not one, but two or more share units and so entitle you to more days afloat in the year. Also, you get a bigger slice of the investment return upon sale, after brokerage and GST. Some options allow you to book more than your entitled days for a fee, assuming they are not required by the ‘owner’ of those dates. Owners can generally swap dates or defer bookings, given notice as all share management is organised online from the base marina.
Basically, there is wealth of choices starting around the $11 – 15K range with finance to approved purchasers. You can shop around online to find your best option. As with most things in life, the more you pay, the higher the quality of boat, services or time afloat.
Boat share is a great way to go for hassle-free cost sharing. You can have just as much, if not more fun for your dollar, by meeting other members and sharing experience or expertise.
One of the first steps, however, is to obtain financial and legal advice. Yacht and Boat does not offer these services. You must consult your financial and/or legal advisor (solicitor) before entering any agreement.
